The organization Gems of Hope helps women help themselves. Reaching nearly 20,000 women in developing countries like Bangladesh, Bolivia, Brazil, Peru, Guatemala, India and Vietnam, Gems of Hope focuses on creating independence and self-sufficiency through small business development — a vital step when one considers that it is often women who are responsible for the feeding, clothing, health care and education of the family's children. Working with local partner organizations, Gems of Hope provides loans to help get small businesses off the ground. In the past, the organization has helped found a maternity clinic in Liberia and a grassroots college in Jamaica.
